School Trips – Accessibility
Outwood Windmill is partially accessible to people with some disabilities.
However those who may be wheelchair bound may not be able to access the windmill itself.
Whilst we do have full disabled toilet facilities on-site, access to both the Roundhouse (Ground Floor) and the Upper Three floors (The Buck) of the windmill are via steps, in particular access to the upper floors from the ground is by way a VERY STEEP wooden staircase.
These steps may prevent anyone with a disability from enjoying the full experience of the Windmill.
Additionally once inside the Buck of the Windmill access to the upper two floors is by short wooden steep steps akin to those found in old sailing ships and the space is very limited in some areas of the upper two floors of the windmill.
We would also advise that our experience shows that some children may experience a fear of heights whilst ascending the stairs to the windmill. Also the mill may not be suitable for those who are not comfortable in enclosed spaces.
Whilst we welcome disabled people to Outwood Windmill and will always use our best endeavours to cater for those needs we feel it’s important that any organiser or educator is fully aware that the Windmill itself does not permit access to some people with disabilities.
