Online Casino & Poker Tips

Gambling Do: What you should do

1.   Before you start play set your budget limit and stick to it. Set also your profit target amount and make it reasonable.

2.   Watch how your bet is placed by dealers, they do make mistakes.

3.   Leave while ahead. The feeling is great and you are likely to win again next time.

4.   If you lose your set limit and cannot bear to watch others gamble, leave.

5.   Never borrow money to gamble and don't lend either. Lending money to a friend who is losing badly is a sure way of losing him - and probably the lent money too.

6.   Always keep a low profile, whether you are winning or losing.

7.   Do your homework before you gamble online, not after. Read the rules, check the terms on bonuses and cashing out, in particular.

8.   Check the customer service response before you sign up with an online casino. Make a phonecall or send them an email with a question and see how long it takes them to reply.

9.   Check if the online casino is a member of a known association. This won't be a guarantee, but it surely reduces the risk of being let down.

10. Be suspicious of anything that sounds to good too be true. It probably is.

11. Learn money management, it is more important than the game itself.

12. Always bet part rows of chips, maintain whole rows. eg the initial row (kitty row stacked in stacks of 10 chips), winnings are stacked in front of this, as each winning row is completed it is "safe" and can't be touched. You bet only with the next partial row. Once gone, cash up and leave. Take a break and start again for a new session with another kitty. Envelope your profits and don't touch.

13. When playing Poker, take a break of at least three hands after a bad beat to avoid tilting.

14. Your bankroll should be between 10 and 20 times your average bet.

15. Over a period of several weeks, average out your wins and set a reasonable goal for how much you can win and leave when you achieve that goal.

16. Learn to play poker. Poker is really skill and experience, and a little bit of luck. You can bet as you like just remember you can only lose what's in the pot.

17. Tipping dealers; don't wait till it's time to go, they appreciate the try. You might get better attention in your favor for a comp, mistake, or just a bad hand. They don't get rich unless you do. Dealers are pretty darn honest, if they say it's going bad then don't play.

18.  Be sure to tip servers, slot techs and cashiers, providing the service is good. These people work hard in a stressful environment and don't make high wages.

19.  Watch Teller Cages for line ups. This is a good indication whether slots are loose or tight.

20.  Apply the common 'three strike' rule: if you lose three hands in a row, find a new table. This doesn't apply to slots or dice games.

21.  When tipping dealers in most games, there is usually a place on the table to bet a hand for them. If your hand wins, their tip multiplies; if it doesn't they appreciate the gesture much more than a buck or two as you leave.

Gambling Don't: What not to do

1.    Don't be afraid to bet. If you are not up to it, don't gamble.

2.    Don’t try to impress people by betting more than you can afford.

3.    Don't drink and gamble.

4.    Don't gamble if you feel tired.

5.    Don't increase your bets to try to recover losses.

6.    Don't take your check book, ATM card, credit or debit card to the casino.

7.    Don't be greedy; if you lose what you have just won, you are.

8.    Don't gamble more than your set limit.

9.    Don't stay beyond what you have set out to do.

10.  Never quit after a win.

11.  When you win a lot, don't think it's easy. It may feel that way but it never is.

12.  Don't bet more than you can afford especially on a new game or a game that you don't know all the rules of.

13.  Don't lose your winnings. Leave when you are up. For example; if up $50, leave. There is a $100 difference if you then lost and were down $50.

14.  Don't always go for the home run...remember...the tortoise always wins the race.

15.  Don't play scared. If your bankroll has gotten too low for your approach, walk away with what's left.

16.  Just be smart. Let common sense take over, don't think with your money, think with your mind.

17.  In horse racing, don't bet in every race. You can't beat the system. Pick and choose your bets for the day after careful reasoning and stick to your bets.

18.  Don't play without a system, any system! Unless you play for fun.

19.  As a beginner, don't try to master all the games at first, learn how to play well 1 or 2 games...

20.  Don't ask casino employees for the "Hot Slot." They dont know any more than you which machine is the best. If you happen to ask the Cocktail waitress for advice and, by chance, she puts you on a hot machine don't forget to tip her.

21.  Don't go into a game without a set goal. Do what it takes to achieve your goal and quit when you have achieved it.

22.  If you are really serious about making an effort to "beat the odds" or gamble at races, casino games, or OTB betting:
a) Do not take your wife or friends with you; they will only distract you from your concentration and target goal(s).
b) Drink AFTER winning when you are done gambling, NOT BEFORE.
c) Take limited cash only with you. No cards, no checkbook; no extra temptation to go on beyond your means at hand.

23.  Don't go to the casino with a bad feeling, or with a person who believes that they have bad luck! Your attitude can affect your results immensely.

24.  You will not get rich from gambling, so just do it for fun, NEVER to make money.

25.  Don't compile your gambling sessions; if you get beat up real bad today don't be intimidated to sit down at the table tomorrow, or take the time to clear the sting from your mind. On the same note just cause you slaved the mighty casino dragon today, don't think that when you come back next time you're still on a hot streak. Basically EVERY time you sit down start fresh in your head.

26.  In all in Hold 'em Poker don't get frustrated by slow plodding players - stay with them and wait for your chance, otherwise they'll whittle you down mentally making you go for the big (and wrong) call!

How to Beat the Casinos at their own Game

Many of us fly to Vegas or Atlantic City when we get the urge to gamble. Some times we win, most times we lose. Ever wonder why?

Yes, everyone knows that the house has slightly better percentages than the players but that is not the main reason why they come out ahead.

Here are the real reasons that people lose at land based casinos:

  • Free alcohol - your reasoning is dulled and you start making stupid mistakes
  • Scantily clad women - the casino uses these women to distract you.
  • The ringing of the slots and the cheering of the crowds - This gives you a false sense of hope. If all of those bells are ringing, somebody must be winning. Why not you?
  • The lighting - the casino deliberately creates an atmosphere where time is meaningless. Have you ever noticed that there are no clocks? This keeps you playing longer than you would have if you could see day turn to night.
  • Oxygen - many casinos pump in oxygen to give you a bit of a buzz so you can play longer

The advantages of an online casino:

  • No alcohol. You can choose not to go to the fridge and get that beer. You also don't have anyone pushing it on you.
  • You can shut off the sound on your computer. Without the sounds, you are less likely to allow your emotions to run wild. You will also think a lot clearer when betting.
  • No scantily clad women. You can shut off the tv, and radio and tell your girlfriend or boyfriend to put some clothes on.
  • Most of us have windows so we can watch time pass. More importantly, you should wear a watch and preplan how long you will spend gambling on each round. You can also keep an eye on your funds. No need to count chips. The screen tells you how much you have won or lost.

For all of these reasons and more, gambling online makes more sense and gives you a better chance of adding to your billfold. Just remember, once you have reached your predetermined win - log off and get out of the house! That way you will actually keep your winnings and watch them deposited straight into your bank account.

 Online Poker Tips for Beginners

Online Poker Tip #1

If you are new to online poker, an important poker tip is to be sure to learn the software of the poker site you have chosen to play poker at. It doesn’t make sense to start playing poker for real money and make mistakes with the poker software. Every poker site offers free poker games. Play in these free poker games for at least 10-15 minutes to get used to how to post blinds and make your actions before risking your hard earned dollars. Remember this poker tip.

Online Poker Tip #2

Another important poker tip is that you should be sure to take full advantage of the deposit bonuses at the site. Almost all poker sites offer some type of deposit bonus for new poker players. A common deposit bonus is 20% up to a $100 maximum bonus. Even if you are not willing to risk $500 in playing poker, go ahead and deposit the $500 to receive your $100 bonus. Once you have played enough hands you can withdraw the $500 and put it back in the bank. Of course, you have to be careful not to lose it all when playing poker. Be sure to set an amount that you are willing to lose and do not go over it. If you don’t want to lose very much then be sure to play at limits which you are comfortable with and fit your bankroll. For beginners with a bankroll of $500, I would not recommend playing poker at limits greater than $.50-$1. Managing your bankroll properly by playing at the correct limits is one of the best poker tips I can offer as many players make the mistake of playing at limits too high and end up going broke.

Online Poker Tip #3

Pay attention to this poker tip! This third online poker tip is talked about a lot in my book, Internet Texas Hold’em: Winning Strategies from an Internet Pro. Many poker players get distracted in online poker by talking on the telephone, reading emails, playing two tables at once, or watching TV. Let your opponents be the ones who make big mistakes to hurt their poker game because they don’t pay attention. A big part of your winnings will come from analyzing the style of play and poker strategies used by your opponents.

Online Poker Tip #4

Here’s an online poker tip focused more on strategy. It is probably the most important poker tip I can suggest in terms of strategy for beginning poker players: don’t play many poker hands! The biggest online poker mistake by poker beginners is playing too many poker hands. They watch poker on TV and see these professionals play crazy poker hands and think it is OK to play them. You will be sure to lose if you play too many poker hands. One big advantage you will have over your opponents is that you will play fewer poker hands than your opponents. My website has a great tool to help you in your starting hand play. This tool uses the starting hand guidelines outlined in my book. You have no excuse! Remember this important poker tip :Don’t play many poker hands.

Online Poker Tip #5

Have fun! Poker is a game which is meant to be fun. To have fun you need to be sure that you are playing with money that you can afford to lose. On the Internet it is possible to play for pennies. With these low-limits you can play poker for a few hours for less than the cost of going to a movie. So even if you lose a little think of it as entertainment. This poker tip is essential to enjoy the game! I see too many people take this game too seriously and end up forgetting this tip and the reason why they played the game in the first place.

Online Poker Tip #6

Finally, an important online poker tip to beginners and everyone else, poker is more fun when you win! Take a little time to study your poker game to improve your results. Be sure to read my book and poker books from other authors, participate in the poker Forum on my website, and read poker magazines for articles such as this one. One good idea or poker tip can end up saving you lots of money.

Hopefully these poker tips will come in handy and improve your poker playing skills so that you will enjoy the game even more. So remember all of these poker tips, study the game, play within your limits and bankroll, and have fun!

 Basic Texas Hold'em Strategy

If you want to be a good Texas Holdem player there are some topics you need consider:

How much money should you invest?
If you are looking to just have fun, don't invest any more than is 'fun' to lose. Hence, if you're comfortable blowing 100 bucks, put in $100 and see if you can win with it.

If you are looking to make money, you should be able to bank 200 big bets at the limit you play. Hence, if you play a $2-4, you should have $4 X 200= $800 dollar roll. For $5-10, your target roll should be $2000. These numbers prevent you from blowing your entire bankroll because of one bad run.

Some may say that the 200 big bets is too low for shorthand, but we believe you need to be reasonable about potential losses. You don't want to invest more than 200 big bets unless you've proven that you're successful at that limit.

Starting Hands

While playing Texas Holdem the first thing you must understand is which hands are good and which are bad. Though it depends on the number of people in the game and the type, here is a general guide to use when you are just starting out but want to be a winning player at the lower limits. I suggest starting out at a fixed limit of $1-2 or lower.

Hands to Raise with:

These are called 'premium hands' that you want to jam the pot with preflop:

AA, KK, QQ, AK, JJ, AQ, 1010

These are the hands to call with:

You want to see the flop with these hands and then decide. Do not call three bets with these hands, call only one or two.

AJ, KQ, QJ, J10, 109 (only if of same suit),99, 88, 77, Ax (same suit)

Pot Odds

Once you hit the flop, you should use pot odds to decide your next action. When you hit the flop, either you will be winning or hopefully winning (with a made hand) or you want cards to improve your hand (you are drawing).

If you have a made hand, you should bet and raise. You want to win the pot now because more cards can only help your opposition.

If you do not have a made hand, you are drawing. You must use 'pot odds' to determine if you should call or fold. First, you must count the number of outs you have. An out is a card that will make your hand the best hand.

For example, if your hand is KJ, and the board is Q 10 7, then your outs are 4 Aces and 4 9's, or 8 outs total. To calculate your percentage of hitting an out, you take the # of outs times 2, then add 2. Once you figure out this number, you multiply it by the pot to see what the maximum bet is that you can call.

For example, if you have 6 outs (6 cards will help you), you have about a 14% chance of hitting. If the pot is $100 and you must call $10, you should call b/c you can call up to $14 (.14 X 100) but the cost is only $10. However, if the bet to you was $20, you should fold, because that would require a 20% chance of hitting.

Slowplaying

This means deceiving your opponents into thinking you have less of a hand then you do. For example, suppose you hold KK. The flop comes K33, so you flopped a full house! There is no need to scare people out of the pot because there is little chance of someone drawing out on you. Thus, you should wait to the turn or maybe even river to jam the pot with bets and raises. You should slowplay if two conditions are met:

1. You hold a whopper and there is almost no chance of someone drawing on you

2. You will only get action if some other cards come out that will improve your opponents' hands, but these cards are not good enough to make these hands beat yours.

Tilt

Being on tilt means letting your emotions disrupt your ability to play. All poker players go on tilt at least once during their career, but limiting these episodes is essential to winning at poker.

Poker is a game that requires reason. If you have JQ of spades, and the flop comes AQ10, all of hearts, and there is a lot of betting action, you need to know to fold. If you were on tilt, you would let your emotions take control and make you do whatever it took to take down the pot. You would keep chasing, hoping to catch a king and hoping that no one had a flush.

Is a fact that people who get upset and don't stay focused and reasonable, will lose all the money they brought to the table, is imperative to stay focused and rational while at the poker table.
While going on tilt is natural, you need to limit it. Generally, the best way is to sit out a couple of hands and go on a walk.
